UPM Research Award

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) has awarded the Research Award to Narciso García, professor, founder, and coordinator of the Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes (GTI) at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (ETSIT), in recognition of his career and contributions to the field of telecommunication engineering. This award highlights his key role in training new researchers and developing international standards in digital image and video processing.

With over 50 years of experience, he has been a leading figure in his field, driving innovation in computer vision, video compression, immersive environments, and quality of experience assessment. In addition to his research work, he has held significant positions at UPM, including Vice-Rector for International Relations, member of the Social Council, and Director of the Department of Signal, Systems, and Radiocommunications. His influence has extended beyond academia, actively participating in national and international organizations, coordinating the Spanish Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI) and the Spanish Evaluation Agency (ANEP).

At GTI, we are proud of this well-deserved recognition of his impeccable career and honored to be part of the legacy he has built over the years. His dedication has left an indelible mark on the scientific and academic community, contributing to the university’s progress and the advancement of digital image and video processing.
